It’s hard to complain about the Josh Hamilton deal when you see what Edinson Volquez is doing, but how can any Reds fan not cringe when they see that The Natural is hitting .600 for the Texas Rangers in Spring Training.
Not to mention his .647 on-base percentage and his you-have-got-to-be-kidding-me 1.747 on-base-plus-slugging average. Hamilton leads the Majors in hits (18), RBI (12) and slugging percentage (1.100). By the way, all of those stats are the best for any player – on any team – in Spring Training this year (and some say ever).
“Just” Spring Training or not, it doesn’t take a baseball historian to know that those aren’t exactly Royce Clayton-esque numbers. The dude can flat-out hit, and I’ve never wanted to write my, “Please Implement a 4th Outfielder Rule” letter to Bud Selig more than I do right now.
I realize the Reds didn’t get rid of Hamilton because they didn’t think he could play, but when you see numbers like that, we Reds fans really hope this trade turns out to be worth it.
No pressure, Volquez.

The other factors to take into account are Hamilton’s health, and his personal comfort level - having disposed of both the Narron boys, the Reds left Hamilton without his support system. It’s academic now of course, but Hamilton may not have been quite so super this spring if he was still with Cincinnati. I think shipping him down to Texas was the best thing to do for all involved.
